This is my 2 minute video entry for the National Academy of Engineering Video contest celebrating its 50th anniversary. I decided to make a mini documentary about some of the major benefits of satellites in the world. The video will explain how technological advances help the welfare of humanity.
THE SCRIPT / DESCRIPTION OF VOICE OVER:
The advances in satellite technology since 1964 to the present have tremendously impacted and benefited human welfare and the needs of our global society today. Although the first satellite was launched in 1957, as technology progressed many other different kinds of satellites have been and are being engineered ever since. These satellites provide beneficial services to humanity such as: the Global Positioning System also known as GPS, world wide communication broadcasting technologies, and weather forecasting. These engineering achievements contribute to human welfare by improving communications, preventing disasters, saving lives, and making life better. A GPS satellite is used by the NAVSTAR Global Positioning System to provide precise location and time information in all weather conditions and sends this information to GPS receivers located around the world. GPS receivers are now put into small things such as mobile devices, cell phones, and laptops, which allows people to find accurate directions to locations they want to go and minimize chances to getting lost. It's not only convenient for personal use, but also helps to save lives since firefighters, and police transportation units cut down travel time by using GPS technology to help people as soon as possible. Also Satellite communications allows people to connect with each through texts, instant messaging, phone calls and video calls therefore Having a friend, relative, or coworker over seas is no longer an issue likeit used to be.Another benefit of satellites is weather forecasting. Weather satellites play an important role in human welfare because it predicts and informs about upcoming weather conditions, storms and hurricanes, so that people can anticipate and prepare themselves. Although satellites cannot avoid or stop these conditions from happening, the information provided by them can help prevent causalities and further damages. Lastly, satellites have changed the way we understand the universe, allowing us to orbit around the earth to study and learn more about our own planet and our future.
